Octopus is featured as a boss battle for the first time, and is voiced by actor Jim Meskimen, who also plays the role of the President of the United States in the game. Spider-Man is still voiced by his character actor from Spider-Man 2, Yuri Lowenthal, and still portrayed by the actor who played him in Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker. The game's story includes a villain in the form of the supervillain Electro, who is based on the creation of the game's art director, Shawn Lee.
The game features a number of spider-themed missions for completion by the player. The game's open world (similar to that of Spider-Man 2) consists of a version of New York in the comics, and features a more diverse cast of characters than the films. Two of the chapters are optional cutscenes the rest are interspersed in the main storyline. The game is split into 11 chapters that play out in real time, and feature a number of optional side missions. Treyarch's version of the game is similar in many ways to the Spider-Man 2 game, making alterations to the story and gameplay.
